Museum Member Daniel preserving the history of a 1989 M998 HMMWV
The 1989 M998 is a model of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), commonly known as the Humvee, used extensively by the U.S. military. Designed for durability and off-road capability, the M998 was introduced in the 1980s as a replacement for older military vehicles like the Jeep. The 1989 version is a basic cargo/troop carrier variant, powered by a 6.2-liter V8 diesel engine paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Built by AM General, the M998 features a wide stance, four-wheel drive, and a high ground clearance, enabling it to handle rugged terrain and extreme conditions. It can carry up to 2,500 pounds of payload and accommodate four passengers. The M998 played a crucial role during military operations in the late 20th century, including the Gulf War, and is notable for its adaptability—serving as a platform for weapons, communications, and field support.
